8 of 10 going

A relaxed first dip into cooler open water, in a small group of up to 10 with a qualified coach and lifeguards on site. These dips are part of a project to bring more women into London's waterways and to build our understanding of how our habits affect them. Each session includes a short talk on a different topic, such as water quality, wildlife, and how to enjoy blue spaces in a way that looks after them. This session’s talk is about how your body adapts to cold water, and later sessions will cover other topics. What will happen We start with a short talk from your coach about how the body reacts to cold water, why the first minute matters, and how to get in and out safely. Then we take a short, guided dip together. Dips are kept brief and you can get out whenever you like. Afterwards there is time to warm up, have a hot drink and chat. Who it is for The session is women-only and inclusive of trans women. Beginners are especially welcome. What to bring Swimsuit, towel, warm layers you can put on quickly, a woolly hat, something to stand on, and a hot drink. Wetsuits, Neoprene gloves and boots are optional. You will be asked to complete a short pre and post session form once you sign-up. Questions? Email programmes@womenintriuk.org

Before you book, please read:

I can swim and I am comfortable in water out of my depth.

I understand that cold water can affect the body quickly, including making it hard to breathe or move in the first minute, and that this is a risk even for confident swimmers.

I have no medical condition that makes swimming in cold water unsafe for me, or I have checked with my GP and they are happy for me to take part. I will tell the coach before the session about any condition, injury, medication or pregnancy that could affect me.

I will follow the instructions of the coach and lifeguards, and I will get out of the water straight away if I feel unwell or I am asked to.

I understand that I can stop at any point, and that I take part at my own risk and am responsible for my own safety.

The emergency contact I have given is correct and has agreed to be contacted.

Take part at your own risk. You're responsible for your own health, safety and insurance, and for choosing sessions that suit your ability. Read our privacy policy for how we handle your information.
